New Divers Weekend - Plymouth - 21 & 22nd April 2001
As we drove over the brow of the hill on Saturday morning, Plymouth Sound was like a mirror! A couple of yachts were motoring out since there was no wind, and the sun was shining on a beautiful scene. A perfect morning for divers!
All the eight new divers did two dives on Saturday from the shore, starting in the harbour at Fort Bovisand. On the first dive everyone demonstrated their individual Club Diver skills and on the second one, we went in in 3's so that buddy skills could be practiced. In between, Mrs Painter provided a splendid array of rolls and ingredients for lunch, and a constant supply of boiling water for soup and tea.
On Sunday we woke up to rain beating on the windows and a force 6 strong breeze from the South. It was really rough around the headland where we had planned to dive, and as there had been no improvement by 11am, we decided to do just one dive each near the breakwater fort using the Worcester Divers RIB to get there and back. The diving went smoothly, though the trips there and back were pretty bumpy. Most pairs found the little barge sunk in 10m, some fish and crabs to play with, and one pair finding a conger eel. The wall of the fort itself was covered with fan corals as well as devonshire cup corals.
